Pros

You don't pay taxes on your income earned here.

Cons

Chaotic place, poorly managed, unclear task assignments. Some people are doing close to nothing while others are working extremely hard. Rampant nepotism and cronyism. Stagnant or unmotivated staff. I never saw people being fired for not pulling their weight. It was as if there were no rules for getting rid of underperforming employees as well as no rules for promoting the good ones. If you have a green card holder or a US citizen and you are here, shame on you. Politics decides 90% of what is done, who is hired etc. Most who become permanent staff are well connected belonging to politically dominant classes in Latin America. Yes, lots of country mafias. Highly trained and well experienced who come by merit are not welcomed. Lots of insecure people feel their positions threatened. If you come here thinking this is an org with an honest and laudable mission such as 'improving lives' you are being naïve. Inefficient use of budget. While the IDB advices to the client countries to spend their money efficiently, it doesn't practice what it preaches. There are rules that force each department to basically throw out of the window all the remaining budget at the end of the year to avoid losing their 'share of the pie' next year. The capital given to the IDB is tax payer money from a lot of very poor countries and yet this happens. If this is not hypocritical I don't know what is.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. At the IDB, we work every day to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. We are a trusted partner of governments, NGOs, start-ups, and other stakeholders who also work for the region. To remain a trusted partner and continue to improve lives, we must maintain rigorous standards and procedures.

Pros

IDB is a good company for young professionals that are begging their career and also for someone that wants to start an international career but be aware of the cons before make a decision.

Cons

No meritocracy at all. No career plan. Political influenced environment. No talent management or retention. Be aware that if you plan to work at IDB as consultant the HRD has defined new rules for this type of contract that may not be attractive enough for you to decide to leave your home country to work overseas.

Pros

salary and looks goods look on the resume

Cons

Terrible supervisors, micro-managers, bullies. Lack of career support and mentoring for consultants. If you are a consultant you are treated like a second-class citizen. Staff will not invite you to meetings even if you are leading the project, they will try to remove you from the field missions that you are organizing, and if you manage to go or attend the meeting they will prevent you from speaking. Consultant women are given the secretary jobs, not considered or even given the opportunity to write the policy papers, those are usually given to men even if they just finish university and you have a master degree and experience in the field, they think you have the job just for fun and not to get bored like when women joined the labor force in 1950s. There are very limited opportunities to transition into staff, if you get a clearance after you had a successful panel, they will ignore it or even go out of their way to change the track of a new staff opening to force you to go through a panel again and avoid hiring you, a total waste of time. If you are not using the clearance system just get rid of it, stop pretending. Supervisors will pretend to speak highly of his/her team but in reality just want to keep you in the dark, so that he/she can be in charge of the really important stuff. They make you sign in a timesheet every month but you can only record 8 hours per day, so even if you overworked a week to get the project done you can only record 8 hours. Its rediculous and a total waste of time.
