Pros

A large company with many opportunities both in the US and around the world. IP pays well, with benefits on par with the competition. You can potentially move between functions in addition to transferring from one locale to another. The atmosphere is, for the most part, informal and most managers are more than willing to share information and knowledge for the good of the organization.

Cons

Many of the managers are unschooled in how to manage people; many are swayed by appearances rather than results in their promotion and treatment of subordinates. Politics play a major role in advancement beyond middle management ranks. It is often assumed that performance is directly related to hours spent at the office.

Pros

The company offers competitive pay and benefits with strong emphasis on a safe work environment. There are many facility locations, leading to the possibility to live in an area where one wishes. Many employees have enjoyed a long stable work history with the company. The company has a diverse workforce with clear anti-discrimination policies.

Cons

The company is undergoing downsizing of salaried positions. This appears likely to continue. Virtually all decisions are made from the top. There are strict bureaucratic procedures for all activities. Most facilities are located in remote areas resulting in long commutes for those who don't wish to live in the country. Unofficially, promotion requires relocation to facilities around the country/world.

Pros

They will do the best they can to retain their cooperate staff in these difficult economic times; as long as you have pulled your share. The paper industry is not going any where anytime soon and International Paper is very involved in conservation and sustainable practices. Company is very active in international expansion.

Cons

Very conservative cooperate environment and overly traditional. The one progressive change they made was too drastic and incorrect; selling all of the land. They also terminated the pension program recently. Project management regularly incorrectly estimates, and is too accommodating to schedule slippage and budget overflows. Outsourcing is becoming a common practice.
