Pros

Gaining lots of experience in management, managing databases, volunteers, hiring interns and volunteers, creating curriculum, teaching some classes, and making important decisions that impact the program. Able to flex time.

Cons

Low pay for a lot of work. Not easy to move up the ladder. It is a good place to gain experience but if you want to move up, you will need to work elsewhere after a few years at IRC.

Pros

Experience varies by country program, but the country program where I worked ran like a well-oiled machine. There was a lot of autonomy and room for innovation within your own job, but not much beyond that. The work was rewarding as the progress made was very tangible. Great non-salary benefits.

Cons

Salary was low compared to other NGOs in the country Not much innovation at the project design level Minimal room for promotion for international staff Minimal staff development for international staff Their development projects lack a sustainable vision as they are primarily accustomed to humanitarian aid.
