Pros

The people that aren’t in Senior Leadership are amazing to work with, a lot of them have very interesting stories. You can work from home most of the time. Interesting work.

Cons

Senior Leadership is old and white and there’s little to no opportunity for young, diverse people to be in leadership positions. Much of mid level and senior management still have outdated perspectives on international development and almost always, leadership refused to make any internal statements on traumatic international events that took place where many of our friends and colleagues worked. They’ve tried and failed on multiple occasions to build effective organizational change and establish healthy norms around DEI and almost every department is overworked and underpaid. I watched three people of color get fired from my team over one year for a failure to meet “performance metrics,” however not a single department uses effective KPIs to define what that means. There are little to no opportunities for professional development and promotions feel very much based on relationships rather than performance. It IS an NGO so maybe that’s just a symptom of the industry.
