I recently made my career change from a PhD candidate of engineering to application development and started working for a local client near Philadelphia. The company provides great resources for me to get started off with actual application development even though I have quite much exposure to it in more theoretical ways. I worked on several projects in house and then was assigned to client site; and I would say both work environments are friendly and interesting.

Cons

Initial compensation is not as great as a junior developer but I understand that the growth could be good.
