Pros

The benefits are excellent, and working for a university is rewarding in and of itself. Depending on the department, the culture can be good. Private universities allow for more flexibility than public regarding project implementation and acceptance.

Cons

Upward growth doesn't exist. Many departments have a toxic culture, and there is little cross-departmental collaboration. The pay structure is not uniform, despite having an outside company coming in to "restructure" the pay scales and roles.
