Pros

As other reviews say, many of the people here are smart and motivated. The product is decent on its own, and ranks as one of the better ones in the small niche that it tries to fill. It is flexible enough to fill several different facets of that niche, which is nice - customers are from various interesting fields like aerospace, automotive, medical, and computing. My manager was divine, but I was a lucky one.

Cons

While my manager fought for our team to have opportunities to grow, most of those opportunities were either internal or leavings from other departments. If you work in engineering or product, you get what you ask for. If you don't, you're probably not going to be able to find much in the way of promotions or raises no matter how excellent your work.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for sharing your pros, cons, and advice. It’s great to see your positive feedback on your manager, colleagues, the product and the market. I’m sorry that things didn’t work out to the full extent that you desired per the title of your review, but hopefully your time with the company was meaningful nonetheless. I believe that Jama does do a good job of promoting and hiring from within, in fact, in my short time at the company (currently have been here 4 months) I’ve seen several people be promoted or selected for new roles in the company – probably more than I’ve seen with other companies. I highly value developing employees and promoting them within the company so I will make sure that this continues to happen and that it is actively happening across the whole company. I appreciate the advice to management, especially the perception that department rewards and recognition may vary. Every department is valued so I will continue to focus on making sure the collective team feels that recognition.

Pros

-Great work/life balance for nearly all employees (I know some work 70 hrs a week, but that is an exception) -Good benefits: wellness benefits, best health insurance I've ever had, decent amount of PTO -For the most part, they hire really really smart people -Founder is no longer the CEO, but he still gives a damn -Fairly transparent when it comes to how much money the company has, how close we are to our targets, etc. -As a whole, people are friendly, fun, smart and want to see the company succeed. There are few bad apples here. Most are very very very good apples.

Cons

-I was one of the first 100 employees, and I think that made all the difference for me. I basically designed the job I wanted to have after working here for a year. Now the opportunities to grow internally are basically nil—most jobs that open are for senior candidates only. Which is a huge bummer, because we have so many bright, hungry employees here who would do wonders if given the chance. -The compensation is so out of whack. Now, this might be a tech industry thing, and not a Jama thing, but I'm compelled to call it out. I make much less than many people here, and not for a lack of proven results. I was not a seasoned industry vet when I accepted this offer, so I didn't realize how I was shooting myself in the foot for future raises by accepting what I did (both when I first started and when I accepted the minimal raise when I got promoted). -We could do a much better job of trying to hire minorities (both gender and racial minorities). The trainings for things like Unconscious Biases are volunteer-only, so the people who could really use them, don't attend.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for sharing both your list of pros, cons, and advice. It’s great to hear how strong your relationship is with your management and colleagues. You are correct that right now we are filling positions with more senior level candidates, whereas in the past we hired a wider range of experience levels. In the short term, we need some very specific skill-sets in targeted roles to achieve our growth goals and to best serve our customer base. Longer term, we will need a broader spectrum of skills and experience again. Start-ups are dynamic, especially when it comes to hiring so I hope you hang in with us for the long term. There hopefully will be many opportunities to continue crafting your role and building your expertise as we scale. It’s a bit difficult to comment on compensation because it’s such a personal thing, but what I can share with you is that we have a very intentionally crafted compensation strategy that benchmarks Jama with local and national companies in software and at our stage of growth. When you combine base salary, equity, and benefits our compensation has proven to be very attractive and market competitive. As far as diversity goes, our employee make-up generally matches that of the region but I agree with you that we can always do a better job of hiring more minorities and that is definitely a priority at Jama. We have hired several women in Engineering and diverse candidates in key roles but we can and want to do more. Thanks again for providing your candid feedback. Overall, I’d encourage you to work with your manager and the People team to make sure that your voice is heard and that we have a solid path forward for both you and the company.

Pros

At Jama you really feel valued as a person and employee. It's a great working environment and I feel challenged on a day to day basis. Plenty of opportunity for growth and there's real team ethic, we get things done and have fun doing so. We have a great product that our customers love and more are getting on board daily. The new CEO has made an instant impact and there is a real positive energy about the place right now.

Cons

Honestly can't think of any, you could say we should be growing faster but it feels like careful, measured growth right now.

Thank you for the great review, I’m really proud that Jama is a place where you are advancing your career. Your statement about our company growth is spot on – growth is exactly what we are all focused on and are achieving at a strong pace, but it’s definitely not growth at all costs.
