Pros

You will LOVE working at JMU -- If you work with one of the offices that fall under Student Services, or Athletics, or if you are a faculty member. If you are not taking a job in one of those areas, you will not like working at JMU.

Cons

Old-boy network and bullying are rampant across some pockets of the JMU administration / departments. A good portion of advertising for "new hires" for new positions is only advertised within the JMU community, and existing part-time staff members get those jobs. Human Resources has no one to represent for "staff members." The staff's HR omsbudman position was deleted. There is only one EEO officer for the entire university, which employs more than 4,000 faculty and staff members.

Pros

State benefits are good, but the dysfunction of the organization is not worth the compensation.

Cons

Dysfunctional management, drug abuse usage with a particular manager, micro management, ineffective communication, and the in ability to effectively lead staff in a positive team environment. The Assistant Manager communicates nothing, does not lead staff, does not cultivate relationships inside or outside the organization. It is a terrible work environment where fear plays in the day to day environment of the employees. This type of leadership should be removed from managing people. It is very unfair to the employees. No human resource back up either! DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY...they are dangerous!

Pros

Beautiful campus, jobs pay more than fairly for the area

Cons

Can be hard to integrate into for outsiders, there is a definite campus culture that permeates everything, staff tends to stay in positions forever so not a lot of opportunity for advancement
