Demeaning, dehumanizing experience.

Pros

Free water and restrooms. Free hat and shirt.

Cons

Low pay, tons of cleaning, poor management. I felt like Cinderella always cleaning and being yelled at about not doing things correctly. Never trained properly. I was a driver, but spent too much time cleaning, answering phones, and making sandwiches. Management was always in the weeds, even when it wasn't busy. They were fearful of audits from corporate, so everything was scrutinized to the point of nano-management. Drivers get minimum wage, plus 5% of the sale, and any tips you get. What is 5% of a $5.50 sandwich? The answer is: a joke. Most customers are cheap. You will get stiffed a lot. There are also split shifts, where you might work 4-6 hours in the morning/afternoon, then take an hour break, then work another 4-6 hours. That's a lot of time to spend cleaning and delivering $6 orders.

Pros

In short, I was able to become a shift manager in less than a month. This was largely because, unlike some of the people who had been working there for months (and in one case, over a year) I learned the menu.

Cons

They appear to have a standard of hiring the worst possible people for the job (or really any job). Although I know some people at other stores that are quality employees and have a decent staff, my store was filled with people who didn't know the menu, were unhygienic, has little or no customer service skills, and had to be continually monitored (or they'd do something bafflingly wrong). As I mentioned before, at my store there were employees who worked there for well over a year and did not know how to make a sandwich, wash dishes, or do basic tasks. Whether you're a driver or an in-shop, there are less than 20 menu items (and it's not like any of them have special preparation). Eventually I made a case for them to get shown the door but it was only after nearly six months of asking what certain employees had done to continue to work there. I was also only paid $8/hr to be a shift manager and made significantly more as a driver, so there was no real motivation for advancement. There were also points where I worked 28 days in a row (that's why it got one star for "work/life balance." I don't know whether it's like that at every JJ's.

Pros

*Fun atmosphere *Working with young people *Easy job *Flexible hours

Cons

*Upper management doesn't seem to care about regular employees (I worked there for four years and the owner of a 5-store franchise never could call me by name.) *Extra responsibilities aren't worth the tiny pay raise (manager's make about $12/hour are responsible for the success of the store.) *Doesn't pay overtime. (my franchise, at the time called Turner Services Group, wouldn't pay overtime because generally people who worked more than 40 hours both delivered and worked in-shop. Because these two positions had a different pay scale, the company doesn't pay overtime for picking up extra shifts if your work as both of these positions adds up to more than 40 hours. Even if you did work 40 hours in one position, asking for overtime only meant your hours would be cut, resulting in fear of management.)
