Pros

Never a dull moment, coworkers are decent people, vacation pay adds up quickly, you should feel a sense of joy and empowerment if you are doing your job well, since you help children who have endured trauma.

Cons

Low salary compared to the actual hours needed to be completed to meet endless deadlines, insanely high case load counts, lack of support from higher-ups/supervisors, mandatory work days, monthly on-call shifts, no room for growth, dishonesty from higher-ups, low retention rates, endless promises of a better future that never come to be, inability to actually take time off of work, insurance doesn't cover much, but is costly. Most importantly the slogan "people matter" is a not on that pertains to the employees! You shouldn't see coworkers crying daily due to their never-ending work-load,

Thank you for sharing your perspective on being a case manager in Kansas child welfare. We would be curious if you were in your role before or after Oct. 2019, because the environment has changed for the better with the start of the new state child welfare grants that began then. That is because these contracts/grants are more adequately funded and structured to provide several more critical support positions, which is in line with your suggestions. Either way, please know your feedback is very valuable and we agree with many of your suggestions. "People matter" applies first to KVC team members, and we are working to increase employee support through a new multi-year partnership with Gallup around employee engagement. We regret we weren't able to help create the supportive environment you needed and deserved before you moved on, but truly wish you the best going forward.

Pros

KVC Health Systems is a values-based nonprofit organization and recently began an employee engagement initiative to better retain employees and promote more positive employee daily interactions! I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day and my team's communication is great. My supervisor is receptive to feedback and makes sure I understand what is expected of me. Training in the first two weeks is a lot of information but all necessary to understand the role, function, and programs used daily. I can see myself working at this organization for a long time as long as I have advancement opportunities. I'm grateful to KVC for giving me the opportunity to begin my career!

Cons

Comparable salary for people of my same experience and education but definitely seeking opportunities to advance in position, title, and pay; IT issues can be frustrating but are usually solved quickly--depending on the problem.

Thanks so much for your positive review of working at KVC! You're right about the employee engagement initiative. We know we have work to do, and are excited about helping our managers be the best they can be, so they provide great support to our team members. Your feedback about advancement opportunities is important. Your supervisor will work closely with you to explore the many ways this can happen!

Pros

It can be fulfilling work helping kids. Management is usually really friendly and willing to listen. IF staffed properly shifts can be very fun and fly by. Get lots of PTO a year and always have overtime available to work. HR is insanely friendly and helpful and always willing to talk.

Cons

Never staffed properly which leads to very dangerous work environments. Sometimes 2 staff with up to 15 kids with psychiatric and behavioral concerns that are often violent. Breaks are practically never an option and they are lying if they tell you that they'll move you to mornings after working evenings for a few months. They'll hire new people for mornings instead of evenings and risk losing you rather than move you to days as promised. Pay is $14/hour with a degree with $15/hour on weekends which could be SO much better considering the work conditions (you can make $14/hour at Target starting now). Management is hit or miss. Some management will go out of their way to help you out and some will nod and listen then do absolutely nothing.
