Highly structured work environment with ongoing opportunities for growth
Pros
I am new to Kauffman after working at a different school, and I can’t find enough good things to say about the work environment. It’s fast paced and highly structured, and the curriculum is pre-planned, which takes a great deal of stress away from spending extended hours outside of work to lesson plan. Additionally, rules and procedures are top priority and instruction is rigorous. The kids are truly the cornerstone of all we do, and that’s why we constantly preach, “ Clear is kind.” In other words, giving feedback to peers and students is crucial. Students know what’s expected of them because teachers hold the line from day one. Teachers get an internalization period and two plan periods. Training is extensive and I felt well-prepared for the first day despite being new to teaching. Coaching is also ongoing, depending on what the teacher needs, and I find it extremely helpful. Overall, I plan to stay at Kauffman for the long haul. I feel supported, have learned how to give adjusting and affirming feedback, and have become a much better teacher and classroom manager in a very short period of time.
Cons
Long hours and lots of coaching. This could be a turn off for some but personally as a non-traditionally trained, new teacher, I take all of the coaching and guidance I can get. Lots of work for first-years that takes some adjusting to. If you have the commitment to teaching and being an ongoing learner, it’s really a pro rather than a con.
