Pros

Amazing teaching staff, dedicated teachers, partnership with families. Incredible deans and social work team.

Cons

EMKS administration cares about having yes-men surround them. They have 0 administrators who are certified in administration, much less who have degrees in admin. They use tactics such as gossip, bullying, straight up lying, and intimidation to get their way. They have a facade of feedback. They say they want teachers feedback, and want to make the school better, and in some cases, adjusting feedback does make changes. However a majority of the time, adjusting feedback is met with conversations about "mindset" or questioning if the teacher is on board with the organization's beliefs. As far as student progress goes, far too much attention is given to testing, data, and bubble kids. Instructional coaches only give feedback on routines and procedures and after multiple years, I could count on one hand the number of times professional development actually helped me become a more effective teacher in my content. The expectations of students in regards to their management and course work is abominable and if I was a parent I would never be okay with the way that teachers are coached to talk to my children. The guise of being "culturally responsive" has been lost on the decision makers of this organization.

Pros

The students are great. They're kids so naturally, they'll have their good days and their bad days, but they're great kids. The sense of community you feel with your fellow teachers is amazing because you are truly stuck in the trenches together.

Cons

Admin is either working themselves to oblivion by making up work that doesn't necessitate daily, hours-long meetings "off the floor" so that their students don't know who they are and teachers are left for themselves (but not when it comes to observations and feedback). Pay is wildly disproportionate to the amount of work you actually put in. There is NO professional development relevant to veteran teachers coming in with 4+ years experience outside of EMKS. Be prepared to be gaslit. If you're a new, first-year teacher, you will feel like everything you do is wrong and the support you receive only exists to ensure you don't quit. If you're a veteran teacher, you will still be made to feel like everything you do and know is wrong and that their way is the only way. The culture among adults can be cliquey (those who joined the school in its first few years/people who drink the kool-aid/everyone else) in particular, but there are many cliques.

Pros

Decent professional development; teaching staff camaraderie; beautiful building

Cons

Development is hyper-aligned to its own school systems, not entirely transferable as a teaching skill set; most teachers work 60-70 hour weeks, beyond contractual hours; if you are a high performing teacher, you will be tasked with additional duties no pay; be ready to be told you’re wrong all the time; does not promote work-life balance in practice
