Kiewit Sucks

Pros

The only real perk Kiewit seems to offer is TDY they give you a few days off after you’ve worked your butt off for 3–4 weeks. But that’s supposed to make up for being stuck on a 40–50 hour salary with no straight time or real compensation beyond that, which just isn’t right. I don’t understand how we’re the #2 contractor and still can’t pay or take care of our own employees properly. Then they try to sell you on the stock program like it’s some great deal but once you’re in, you’re even more tied down than before. At a certain point, you’re basically expected to give up having a happy family, a stable relationship, or time with your kids. If you’re okay with being constantly away and feeling isolated, then sure but that’s not a sustainable way to live. You see it in the lack of stability, people burning out, relationships falling apart and the money isn’t even good enough to justify it.

Cons

The cons with Kiewit are hard to ignore. They’ll work you nonstop, burn you out, and still not appreciate what you put in. The moment your output drops even slightly it feels like they start looking for ways to replace you instead of supporting you. Raises are minimal, bonuses are rare, and recognition is almost nonexistent. There’s also a strong sense that advancement depends more on playing the game than doing good work showing up to team-building events, staying visible to higher-ups, and constantly proving loyalty instead of just being valued for your performance. It can also be frustrating to see inconsistencies in how people are treated or promoted, especially when it feels like standards aren’t applied evenly across the board. That kind of environment creates distraction, resentment, and a lack of trust. Clerks pulled from the field mainly all young good looking women make more than the engineers, and get special treatment. At the end of the day, it can feel like you’re being asked to sacrifice your time, energy, and personal life for a system that doesn’t give much back. And when the compensation and growth don’t match that level of commitment, it’s hard to justify staying long-term.

Pros

A fantastic place for bright ambitious young people to begin their careers. Kiewit strives to be a meritocracy. If you show that you are capable, and if you seek out opportunities, you will get them—even if you’re younger than the typical person in the role. There’s also typically good training and support to be successful. You’ll work with high-achieving folks in high-profile projects, and more often than not you’ll be successful together. I also appreciate that Kiewit stays true to its values. I’ve never been asked to do anything unethical. If I stand up / bring up an issue related to safety our core values, I know management will have my back.

Cons

Downside of high-profile work is long hours, and often high-stress.
