Pros

- 401k with 100% matching up to 3 percent and 50% matching up to 5%. - Company paid visual, dental, and health insurance with options to pay to get a better plan. - Unlimited PTO, just make sure you use it. - Remote-first so there's no expectation to go into the office and you can easily work out of state. - I can flex my time normally and work when I want, although less so now that we have a bunch of mandatory scrum meetings every day. - Promotions are based off effort and demonstration of skills rather than time at the company/in the industry. - The pay's ok, and the equity is nice. - I do feel like I'm developing as an engineer and learning a lot. - We used to have a learning budget to get books or courses with, but I'm not sure if that's coming back this year. - This can be a pro or a con, but there several different code bases with different languages or ideologies. It can be a pro because there's a chance to learn new things with new frameworks. A con because you're jumping between dramatically different code bases just to get a feature to work.

Cons

- My last raise was under the rate of inflation, as were the raises of all 5 of the coworkers I talked to, so we basically got a pay cut. - A lot of employee churn - many people are changing teams or resigning regularly. This means a lot of things are lost in the shuffle, like knowledge on the code, or employee progress plans. They also haven't been backfilling, so my team has shrunk a lot, but the expectations on us have increased. - The main code base is a wreck and not at all fun to work in. It's extremely tightly coupled, it's poorly documented, and most of the people who knew anything about it left. Changing anything in one of the god-objects is a fun game of "What did I break, and will I find out before or after the code is deployed?" Fresh code becomes legacy code almost immediately because engineered are hustled on to the next project and not given time to do cleanup, docs, tech debt, etc. - A lot of time pressure. They really saw the word "sprint" and decided that sprinting is the speed we're aiming for. Scrum meetings are less "we as a team decide on what to do and how much work we're ok committing to" and more "product gives us things and we get to maybe sort of pick which too-large workload we want." I don't think I've has a single sprint where we don't carry over at least 2 tickets. - Feels weirdly stiff for a startup. That might be the insurance side of it? But none of my coworkers are interested in making conversation beyond the occasional "How was your weekend?" "Good. Yours?" Might be a pro if you hate small talk but I find it hard to build rapport when no one wants to talk for more than 15 seconds about their life outside of work. - Even though I've found it to be reasonably queer friendly, and there are a few BIPOC folks, it's still very much a tech/insurance company in diversity. My team is 2/1 men to women and 3/1 white folks to POC. Upper management in tech is almost exclusively white men. - For higher level positions, there seems to be a lot of hiring external people rather than promoting internally.

Pros

Great work culture. The job is 100% remote. Work/life balance also a pro.

Cons

The salary never increased . The management only care about themselves. There is a severe lack of diversity in management, upper echelons to direct.

Below market pay, rampant sexism, micromanaging

Pros

-Seems to be still committed to remote first (especially as so many companies are returning to the office) -Chicago office in a central location - Individual team members are super talented and knowledgable

Cons

-I was told by HR they don't do cost-of-living increases -Pay is rather low for the market, and the benefits package doesn't compare well to other companies (no WFH office stipend, etc) -Typical tech "boys club" -Department management (at least in mine) was rather sexist, and even after an internal investigation, HR refused to acknowledge the issue -Upper management can be micromanaging and unwilling to listen to alternative solutions -Constant changing goals my EGC make it hard to meet KPI's -The way we treated customers was really not right and a bit exploitive -No room for growth -Poor cross-functional team relationships (mostly due to leadership siloing people)

Pros

There's still a small portion of kin that has great people. The benefits are also good.

Cons

-The advertise that they promote within but that is false as you rarely ever get to see anyone be promoted. The only people that did get promoted within are OGs who started back when kin had a handful of employees. The worst part is they hire from outside and have people who wanted the promotion, train the new hires. Again, this is across all departments as well. -Upper management doesn't care about anything but numbers and it's evident when people go to them and are quickly dismissed. -People are afraid to be honest. We have lattice reviews that go on every quarter, but people can't be open as the managers can read the reviews and quickly figure out who it is. Then there's another website they use that's supposed to also be anonymous, but we all suspect that it's not. -There's disrespect to certain departments such as CS. -When you volunteer to be part of a project you're put to do all the work and never get credit for it. This goes across all departments both on the sales and the tech side. -They put you to do work that is outside of your job description and you don't get compensated for it. If you even bring it up and ask for compensation for the extra work you get dismissed and get gaslighted into them saying they the opportunity is worth more and you should be grateful for even being considered. -A lot of people that did speak up for others are no longer with kin and its due to either them getting tired of speaking up without being hear or they got demoted or placed in a bogus made up role. -They waste money on useless things such as the "tacos" which is a platform that keeps track of how many taco emojis you receive. Not only do a handful of people use it, but that's money that could be going to people's pockets to keep them happy. -They did nothing to maintain loyal and caring employees. After speaking to people who have quit (all from different departments including uw,sales, cs, prod, etc) they all admitted to being undervalued and underpayed. -They claim to care about the culture but it all feels like it's just to claim that they're trying.

Awful experience

Pros

Remote work, many great coworkers

Cons

Constantly increasing rates, making it harder to sell and increasing goals at the same time. The agents who are selling the most are typically offering extremely low coverage and really high deductibles because that was the only way to get a competitive price. I felt pressured to neglect my fiduciary duty and offer this type of coverage to meet my goals. Overhired, extremely slow for about 5 months but reassured over and over that the volume will increase soon. When they couldn't gaslight any more, they had to admit that Management's projections were wrong and many agents were the ones to pay the price with mass layoffs. Terrible upper management that messed up projections and lied about it.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. As a member-owned company, it’s crucial to us that we provide coverage that truly benefits our customers, and we never want agents to feel pressured to offer anything less than what's best. As a growth-stage company, we aim to align our team’s structure and resources with both our current needs and our future goals as we expand into new markets. While our goal is to always serve our customers and employees to the best of our ability, we recognize there’s always room for improvement. Thank you again for your feedback, and we wish you the best moving forward.

Pros

Good work/life balance, unlimited pto, and healthcare,

Cons

Upper management did not know how to clearly communicate. Teams were reorganized every 3-6 months with management switching hands just as often. They’re more focused on the minor mistakes teams makes rather that the many accomplishments. Company culture is also toxic and they use horrible puns around with their company name.
