Pros

1) You get to work on interesting problems to solve. The company enjoys a good reputation in the industry due to the highly technical nature of problems they solve. 2) Very knowledgeable colleagues who are often integral parts of committees/working groups. 3) Flexibility to work remotely. 4) You get a lot of autonomy and are encouraged to be a subject matter expert.

Cons

1) Shortage of staff causes internal as well as external frustration. 2) Not much focus on team building. 3) You might end up being a one-trick pony because you will end up doing similar work over and over again. Although this is what a subject matter expert is anyway.
