Pros

Good salary and Great Team work, if you have live/work according the the MBM principles then its a great culture

Cons

Management seem to be move more and more towards micromanagement which gets old fast. Also manager are always moving around and changing roles therefore management can never figure out of to fix the problems that need attention. Also Every Koch company that relies on KBS hates KBS so you get non stop customer rudeness. Also don't expect a promotion unless you look to apply to another department.

Pros

Lots of good people that you work with. If you have the right manager, no micro-management, overall Koch Industries is a great company to work for. Being the IT hub for the other Koch companies, there are a lot of opportunities to get in to new areas of knowledge.

Cons

KBS has a hard time following the KII Guiding Principles, especially when it comes to compensations practices. Has no problems overworking employees and letting them burn out, and not compensating accordingly. Bonuses are nearly non-existent, raises very minimal. If you are specialized in new emerging technologies, definitely be prepared to NOT be compensated accordingly. They have NO idea how to compensate, so will rate you against irrelevant job roles. After 10 years working for KBS, I have NO IDEA where KBS comes up with their compensation scale, because it is not in line with market, or is on the LOW end. One shouldn't have to have an offer from another company (internally or externally) in hand for them to 'miraculously' find that your value is worth THOUSANDS more than what they are currently paying. We are not dumb, we know what our job pays elsewhere, we know when we're being screwed.

Pros

Great collaboration with team members. There are so many wonderful people who work at Koch, people of integrity and creativity. Much is expected of each person. The MBM principles are fantastic, even better when followed consistently. The opportunities for personal growth are there. Taking calculated risks in not discouraged. Mistakes are not penalized. Change is a regular part of the territory. The company cafeteria is great.

Cons

The workload is enough for at least two people. Filling open positions takes an enormous amount of time. Management approval for projects takes a long time. Communicating large changes from management to others isn't always polite; lead time is needed so everyone can get on board.

Koch Response
10y
Thank you for providing feedback as I really value hearing from our employees. First, you hit it right on the nose as far as we have some great people here at Koch, and the culture and opportunities are what makes us unique as a business. I would echo your sentiment on the Wichita cafeteria as well! In regards to your experience as we continue to grow and expand our company, we have seen some growing pains along the way. We are working hard to ensure that as we scale up, communication is a priority. There are many ideas that we have for improving internal communication and we will continue to push forward on those. I was disappointed to see that your experience in regards to our compensation philosophy has not been either explained or applied in a way that feels right. I was very glad though to see that you connected well with how we ideally look to reward employees. The objective of our approach to compensation is to motivate employees to maximize their contributions to long-term value creation at our company. We do this by attempting to replicate some of the ways incentives work in the marketplace. Entrepreneurs are rewarded by being allowed to keep a portion of the value they create in society. Likewise, our philosophy is to pay our people based largely on their total contribution to long-term value creation at our company. We work hard to continue to apply this effectively in all areas to help motivate employees, align the interests of employees and the company, attract and retain highly productive employees, help every employee achieve his or her greatest potential and to create a culture of entrepreneurship. I would encourage you to follow up with your supervisor regarding your observations if they are not in line with what I have described above. We can only get better if we continue to reflect on our approach and adjust as needed. Thank you for sharing your feedback and for helping make us better! ~Greg Joerg, Vice President, Technology Solutions for KBS
