Unrealistic Expectations on Job Performance leads to demoralized Employees. Kohl's is getting really bad about cutting labor budget. Unfortunately, due to their lack of incentives to attract good management through wage compensation and benefits, kohl's is slowly dying. The only thing that is keeping them going is the slow economy and the need for customer's to have cheap merchandise. If the economy ever recovers, expect no staff from kohl's because they will most likely exceed expectations in turn over rate as well.
Do not get a job here unless you are the type of person who doesn't mind feeling like you are a failure when you leave work. The company expects way too much from their employees. I am not exaggerating here. This would not be so bad, if the senior management didn't buy into the unrealistic expectations. Most stores will be staffed with management that believes that a team of 8 people should be able to put out a truck with 12,000 plus pieces on it within 4 hours. That all the merchandise is in the correct place and merchandised to company guidelines as well. That is less than a second per piece from the truck to the proper placement in the store. LOL is all i can say on that one. Same thing with clearance, less than one second from tag to proper placement on a clearance rack, sized and sorted by percentage.
In addition, during peak times, it is not unrealistic for the company to expect you to have a department fully recovered at all times when there are only two people on the floor. While this may be almost possible, due to the unrealistic expectations coupled with unrealistic senior management, turn over rate is high, leading to incompentent employees who don't really know where anything goes, are not trained properly, and have no experience to accomplish the tasks they are expected to do. It is very rare to see an associate with a silver name tag in a kohl's store. Look the next time you go there.
All of this would not be so bad, if the management of the store didn't really expect so much out of their hourly employment. They truly relay these unrealistic expecations to their staff. I can't say I blame them per se. Due to lack of incentives and benefits, the management is really 3rd rate. They do not have the compentency to realize that giving goals to employees that will almost certainly result in failure is bad bad leadership. They do not understand the difference between leadership and management. This environment leads to an abusive one that most certainly will take advantage of motivated, loyal, and passionate employees--they will be the only ones ever getting close to the goals. As a result, you are left with an unmotivated burnt out staff.
Benefits are horrendeous. After the 1st year you get 1 week of vaction that usually can never be used during any holiday. And even then, if you quit within 2 years, you owe that back to the company. There is no gaurantee you will get your vacation either. If you don't get it approved, you loose it. You can have up to 3 weeks of vacation the first year, but you must have the money taken out of your pay check in installments each week. It is called pay for vacation.
If you are looking for a job that gives you unrealistic challenges, leaves you with a sense of failure, pays very little, gives very little in return, then kohl's may be the job for you.
If you are looking for an atmosphere of demoralized employees that you can share failures with, then kohl's may be the right job for you.
If you are looking for a job where you can take your vaction during off season times and never during holidays, then kohl's is the job for you.
