You will work every weekend, holidays and most nights, even though in Tucson, Sundays are dead and often nobody even walks in the doors weeknights after 4:30 pm. It doesn't matter that everyone is sitting around with nothing to do and no customers on Sundays, you still have to be there. Cause you know what? You don't get paid by the hour. You are commission only. They'll work you at least 45-50+ hours a week and you better just be thrilled you have a job. You are supposed to have no life outside of the company. Why should you? The manager doesn't. She works 7 days a week, often open to close. Lord knows why. She certainly doesn't give any ongoing training or need to be there. We sold more every time she was gone simply because there was no pressure! Little to no positive performance feedback with consistent good performance. If the sales are not happening especially during tough economic times micro-mangement takes over causing a very uneasy and stressful atmosphere. The manager eaves drops on all your conversations with customers and associates and knows exactly where you are and what you and every other sales person is doing at every moment. Unless you smoke, forget taking a moments break even if the store is dead. Then it's time to dust your area, listen to tell you what she watched on TV the evening before, Forget taking a lunch break. She never does because she anorexic, so why should you? She will come back and harass you about something while you are eating or tell you "There's a customer on the floor! You need to get out here!" Often you jump up only to find it was someone wanting directions or , "oops, that's so and so's customer". And if you leave for lunch, God forbid, you will feel her wrath when you return. Don't be gone for more than 30 minutes or she will work with the customer that should be yours, sell it and give the commission to her favorite. .Commission based salary therefore it's to their advantage to sell as much as they possibly can to earn a good living, however the staff is treated like they have no desire to make any money and are blamed for slow sales. Management makes you feel like you don't want to make money. You are grilled after each and every opportunity, "Why didn't you sell?" "Did you sell fabric protection?" Commission works in companies' favor, not yours. Say your goal is $50,000 this month. If you make that goal you will make a 7% commission...as long as you jump thru the other hoops. You have to have $10,000 sold to In-Home Design Customer AND $5000 in has to be in Tables, Lamps and Accessory sales, or it drops to 6%. The worst part is that the furniture often isn't ready until the following month or 2 for delivery. This is out of our hands. Say the following month the company gives you an outrageous goal (which goes up every year no matter what the economy is doing!) and you only make it to the 5% commission level but the furniture you sold at 7% is ready for delivery, you guess it, you only get paid 5% after all that hard work. You are paid commission only after delivery, and not the commission you sold it for. Oh! And say the store goal for the month is $300,000 and you are supposed to have 6 sales people to split this between. But the manager fired one and the other left because the job sucks. So now that goal is the same and instead of having to sell $50,000, you now need to sell $75,000 to make it to goal. And then, when you can't, you are put on probation and threatened to be fired if you don't make it to goal 2 out of the next 3 months. And hello! We are the ones doing all the work and the managers and owners are making the big money!!!The ones that are kissing up to customers and working their butts off to sell so you can make so much more money off of us. Sometimes I think CEO's forget who's doing the job for them. It's very hard to know that your CEO is bringing in a HUGE salary every year while their employees are struggling to make ends meet only to have that struggle made harder and harder every year. Favoritism has become a job requirement for managers. Helping only certain employees and covering up for there mistakes, actually doing their job for them. Working with customers on their behalf when they are with other customers...even though you have no customer and could close that sale. and not helping the employees that are juggling customers and doing their job!! Then reprimanding them for not meeting goals. My bottom line comment: treat others how you would like to be treated. I believe that there is going to be a special place in hell for those that made the life of those under them a stress-filled hell on earth experience. My manager changed our schedules often and one day I thought I was supposed to come in at my normal shift time and when I got there I learned I was an hour late. Not that there were any customers in the store or that there wasn't anyone else working...but the manager fired me on the spot.
