Pros

Contrary to other reviews, pay is well above the average in the financial industry. However, please don't be swayed by this. Downsides include the 2008 MacBook you'll be paid to struggle with, and the working environment in the Gherkin, which is unpleasant, and often short of toilets.

Cons

Ah, the booming Death Knell of the Death March Project. I can only speak for London, where real talent, and more importantly, real dedication and commitment can be found amongst the troops on the ground. But in the world of company politics, the wrong people have won the war. The technical leadership are a joke, relying on confrontation to sustain them in their misassigned and misaligned roles. How long before these clowns are finally removed is anyone's guess. And delivery management (project management, to you and me) are simply disconnected from the people they need to, er, deliver. As alleged proponents of "Agile" software engineering, these guys can spend literally months "forward planning" - essentially, locked in a room, divining an order to a book of work that makes no logical sense to the engineers building it, and looking distinctly like a series of firmly frozen waterfalls. Fixed contracts don't need to be like this. I have never, ever, worked anywhere with such a high turnover of staff. During my time there, I saw almost 2 entire turnovers of the London engineering team. Seriously, can you find anything else like this on Glassdoor? This is not an environment where you will thrive. Ghastly - avoid at all costs. Save yourself.

Good people, interesting projects

Pros

Nearly all of my coworkers are smart, professional, and pleasant. I really like almost everyone here. There's plenty of work, and the projects are an interesting mix. The clients are mainly major banks, and most of the work is pretty cutting-edge in terms of technology and finance. (Not all the projects are exciting; there's a mix of internal infrastructure work as well - but Lab49 does quite well in this regard).

Cons

Nothing terrible. Salary and benefits are average, neither outstandingly good nor bad. The company does not have the training, support, or project management infrastructure that one would hope to find in a larger or more mature firm. (Let's recognize that reality usually disappoints at larger and more mature firms as well.)

Pros

Great people - smart, with a can do attitude (generally). Ground breaking projects. Cruft has mostly left the company. Below industry average turnover. Flexible work policy, for those that ask.

Cons

Some of the over promoted dead wood remain. They can be spotted with their headphones on all day, Facebook running in a small window, with a bored/moderately pissed look on their faces. Their only remaining contribution to the company being a post to glassdoor or exit interview, both showing a degree of creativity and flair that they had long since forgotten in the workplace. The company has completely transformed the business model in the last 4 years to a fixed price model. At times this is very inflexible and has led to lots of the pain mentioned in other reviews - the company struggled but individuals struggled too. Many of the disgruntled couldn't cope with FP and lots of the whinging in other reviews really hinge on this (unmentioned) point - bluntly, it can be brutal and you are either okay with that or need to leave. Training is poor - this used to be good but HR have been "looking" at this for the last few years and nothing has happened in that time. Vacation is way below industry average and benefits are about average. Generally, all things HR related are poor/reactive. The "Gherkin" - poor office space, very tired, soulless.
