Pros

It pays well. If you happened to be in a good group, you work may be reward.

Cons

1. Hard to be a good scientist when they EH&S department is totally out of control. Scientists spend more time on mindless compliance than on science itself. 2. What counts is how many papers you publish in good journals. Nothing else matters. 3. Politics is pervasive. Infighting is insense. You well need to engage in one-on-one knife fights to get your funding (figuratively speaking) The atmosphere in a big center like JCAP is toxic. The place is ruled by professors. If you are not one, it is almost impossible to move up. 4. Over half its funding is for renewable energy R&D. With Trump and Rick Perry in charge, that's all going away. I predict some very painful years ahead.

Pros

I have had the pportunity to work on a wide array of important science challenges that matter. The people at Berkeley Lab are smart and excited about what they are doing. I feel like I am making a difference in the world working here.

Cons

The funding of projects is dependent on the federal funding for science and science is not always a priority. However, this cycle rarely actually leads to real cuts.

A hostile place

Pros

Work quality, access to world class facilities, freedom/flexibility in your projects, benefits. All the non-research staff is awesome and helpful.

Cons

The following are for the computational research division where I worked for 5.5 years. Many researchers are quite hostile creating an unpleasant work environment. Senior researchers do not communicate with each other if they are on the same project and all the misunderstandings and issues are pushed down to the younger researchers and get caught with all the bad effects of politics. These certain senior people are not even willing to communicate properly in order to clear the situation. Some researchers are also quite selfish in terms of getting work done to benefit their own projects and do not care about anything else, including any problems or issues others may have - professional or personal. No one offers to provide extra help unless their name is going in the resulting publications. There is absolutely no professional support for career development or to understand all the politics. It's a place where you are on your own and can survive if you are good at politics, are selfish, and don't have issues with exploiting others for your own advancement and to reach higher.
