      The scientific community, location, and career opportunities are all excellent.

      Expensive to live near Berkeley Lab. Office space is tight. Hard to find parking places.

      Pros

      I loved working at LBL because it has a great community. It's a very laid back place with some of the smartest people in the world. It's cool that you can eat lunch next to a Nobel Prize winner. The work/life balance may be as good as it gets. All my PIs there were very thoughtful with regard to vacation time and leave. They also seemed very concerned with my future and helped me out when they could.

      Cons

      Very bureaucratic, which becomes an issue if you try to move around to different departments or get promoted. The lab is located up on a hill, which makes leaving and returning very timely.
