      Researchers out to steal other's ideas

      Pros

      Nice view of the bay. Looks good on your resume when you finally get sense and leave academia.

      Cons

      Long hours. As an ALS postdoc, I was treated as a cheap technician to be used by other researchers to work 24 hour shifts so they can take credit. When I had ideas of my own they were just stolen and worked upon by their students. Very little freedom to do your own thing. Was told of opportunities during the interview that never materialized. Huge amount of bureaucracy, politics, and hard to break through the establishment. Government shutdown always looming. Finally, there are people out there who just care about claiming credit and making a name for themselves, who have little talent and stand on the heads of others to be seen.

      Pros

      Interesting projects, beautiful site (Berkeley hills), fun co-workers, never a dull day/every day is unique, collaboration with researchers from all around the world

      Cons

      Used to be an amazing place to work, but every year, things degraded. Extremely bureaucratic top down structure. Serious lack of accountability in some areas that prevented work from getting done efficiently. A few people seem to do all the work (lots of managers, very few workers on the ground and consequently workload for folks on the bottom is very heavy). Lots of taxpayer money wasted due to inefficiency, poor planning and ever-changing priorities/processes.

      Poor management that treat hard-working employees unfairly

      Pros

      Good to start your career as a researcher/scientist.

      Cons

      Very low pay. Also, non-exempt employees don't get overtime pay despite working overtime for several weeks! The people who work here love the lab with extreme passion and are often reluctant to leave for better opportunities even though they can make 2X, 3X somewhere else.
