Pros

If I could summarize all of the pros, it's that Liberty Mutual is a great company who breaks the image of insurance being a bunch of white men in suits. It's a diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and friendly workplace which celebrates who you are. They'll take pretty good care of you. They're 100 years old and have a good idea of what they're doing. They're not a scummy insurance company, they genuinely believe what they do helps people. Their creed which drives the entire company is "With our policyholders we are engaged in a great mutual enterprise. It is great because it seeks to prevent crippling injuries and death by removing the causes of home, highway and work accidents. It is great because it deals in the relief of pain and sorrow and fear and loss. It is great because it works to preserve and protect the things people earn and build and own and cherish. Its true greatness will be measure by our power to help people live safer, more secure lives". - WFH! They were doing full remote positions many years before COVID 19. Technically it's up to your direct manager around if you can work remote, but that's been changing as time goes on. When COVID hit, they immediately sent everyone home to WFH without exception. No traveling, no office, no exposure. They really went above and beyond to make sure we were ok. In addition to the time off we get, they gave us unlimited COVID time off if we got sick or had to take care of someone who was ill. THAT is taking care of your people. - Time off is pretty decent. It's called FTO, Flexible Time Off, which is your vacation and sick days at one unit. You can take it whenever you want. You'll also get personal holidays from the company. Vacation works by accruing every month as time goes on. You can carry over (as of 2021) 150 hours of FTO to the next calendar year, else you lose it. - Friendly workplace. You can ask anyone, at any Liberty Mutual company, any question and they'll be happy to answer it or find someone who can. It's a culture where you are encouraged to meet new people, ask difficult questions, and form relationships. There's of course an executive off limits conversation policy, but within your specific company (or SBU), you'll find more often than not that you'll know your executives fairly well. - Work life balance is the first tenant of Liberty Mutual. You work your 8 hours and if you want to work more, great, but you're never expected nor required to. They believe that life is more important than work. Some jobs like technology might require the occasional 2 hours once a month on a Saturday for code releases, but other than that it's an INCREDIBLY balanced job with life. - The yearly merit salary increase program is pretty great as well as the performance review. Your performance review results in a numerical score which is then used when it comes for bonus season. They use a program called VIP, where your score is used in conjunction with your specific company and overall Liberty Mutual parent performance to result in a bonus. As a high performer, I usually walked away with <$10K a year in bonus'. It's a really great program which rewards you for your performance. - They walk the walk when it comes to diversity and inclusion. They put a ton of effort and money into inclusion programs, talks, discussions, and meetings. There's a 0 tolerance discrimination policy. You are celebrated for who you are and whatever you might identify as. - Benefits are decent. United Healthcare insurance, Delta Dental, EyeMed Vision, for 2021. They'll pay for your college education with yearly repayments over a certain number of years. - 401K match is excellent, 50% match of up to first 8% of salary. - They still contribute to a pension for you which requires $0 contribution from you. The vesting period is 3 years at time of writing, you end up with a decent amount in there without worrying about it. - They have thousands of offices around the United States which is awesome if you're in technology, you can bop into any office if you're visiting a friend or something. It's a random but cool perk. This will likely change as the shift to WFH results in offices being sold. - Global presence. Liberty works in like 17 countries across the world. There's a ton of opportunity in the US, but also for rotations/work in other countries if that's something you're interested in. - Opportunity, you can change jobs to any position or company within Liberty whenever you want. There's no restriction on time. The only restriction is if you were promoted, you can't seek another position internally that would result in another grade/title change for 1 year. That does not prevent you from making lateral moves, however. - Stability. Even during the pandemic when business' were suffering, Liberty Mutual performed as expected. - Ethical. I worked very closely in technology with the business and they abide by every rule in the book. There's 0 tolerance for missing compliance marks/deadlines, 0 tolerance for doing something scummy or immoral. They do the right thing for the customer, every time. At some companies you might be encouraged to cheat someone to make money, at Liberty you'd be terminated in a heartbeat if you ever tried to do that. They don't mess around when it comes to doing the right thing. - Liberty makes a lot of money and as a result invests a lot in it's people. There's a ton of training opportunity, education, classes, etc. They have VERY close relationships with AWS and other cloud providers. We often got to beta test new AWS services as their first customer to use them, which was cool. We got to work directly with the engineers at AWS developing the products. Great relationships at Liberty.

Cons

- Liberty Mutual parent owns many child companies, called SBU (Strategic Business Units) which you'll work in. Although the fabric of the culture is enacted by Liberty Mutual parent, each SBU has their own specific flavor of it which is a blessing and a curse. Some SBUs don't have as great/welcoming cultures as others, so it's very hit or miss where you land originally. If you're not happy, you can always switch to another job internally. - In regards to technology positions only, compensation is middle to lower end of the market. You'll have a (relatively) stable job, good work life balance and benefits, but you won't get rich quick. Their pay is better than some places, but nothing special. - Technology moves a little slower than the rest of the technology industry. Liberty isn't as bad as some insurance/financial institutions when it comes to trying new things, but they're not on the bleeding edge despite what they might think. - I've met handfuls of people in my personal life who say "Oh I got laid off from them" when they find out who I worked for. Liberty has a VERY strong history of mass layoffs (reduction in force, as they'll try to call it). They'll sometimes decide that positions are no longer offered (like project managers) and you'll have to apply to another job internally or leave. They very actively shift work to offshore teams for underwriting assistant positions. As stable as the company is, I wouldn't necessarily call it a secure company. - United Healthcare insurance is alright is the general sense, but it's not that great at the same time. In 2021 they used CVS Caremark as a prescription benefits administrator which was a catastrophic failure. Forcing you to go to CVS and refusing to pay a dollar for anything elsewhere, except in some cases you're not allowed to go to a CVS at all. It was a bad joke gone very wrong, for the sake of their people I hope they ditch that program. - The executives and sometimes middle management think the underlying workers are morons. They hide their McMansions on Zoom with more humble backgrounds. I'd say the executives are more "real" and direct than middle management can be, but results may vary based on company placement.
