Pros

Innovative and Collaborative Environment: Working with the Lightning team means engaging with cutting-edge technology in a highly collaborative setting where we truly believe we're changing the AI space for good. The team fosters a culture of innovation, encouraging creative solutions and continuous learning where all the AEs enjoy working together.

Cons

As a part of any growing startup, you might face demanding workloads and high-pressure environments due to rapid growth and scaling challenges. This isn't common, but ramps up during EOQ and certain product releases.

Pros

I am a 3x founder with multiple early stage, yet successful exits. I have managed teams of > 10 engineers and mentored employees who have gone on to be successful engineering and operations managers in their own rights. This is my first experience with a Series B company, and I have been thoroughly blown away by my first year here. I thought I knew how to iterate fast on features, having done so multiple times before, and yet I've unlocked a new level of engineering speed and focus adapting to the company culture. I thought I knew how to learn fast, having pivoted companies before and managed at startups in multiple spaces, and yet I've learned more about AI theory, application, and infrastructure in the past 8 months, than 3 years as founder of an AI startup previously taught me. This is a very intense culture, but members of the leadership team do an exceptional job of exhibiting empathy for their employees. At this stage of the company, there may be project deadlines that require you to work late nights and weekends, but this is often rewarded by days off the following week and periods of managed lighter workload. The best week-to-week example of this empathy is in how well the CEO and CTO protect their employees weekends, constantly reminding the team that weekends are for re-energizing, and that anything other than urgent messages should be scheduled for Monday. Regarding coworkers, the engineering team is a collection of PhDs and ex-academics with extensive open-source experience, and serial founders / early-stage operators. It is an excellent group to learn with and learn from. Regardless of job title, everyone here is hyper focused on one thing: Building a multi-billion dollar company. It permeates everything we do. There are plenty of hard challenges to solve and responsibility to be had, if you are the type that strives toward this obstacle.

Cons

There is a tremendous amount of learning and knowledge sharing that goes on here, but you will struggle to succeed if you are not a proactive learner. Everyone here stays busy and stays focused, so if you do not vocalize that you need to understand something you currently do not, then the assumption will be you already understand how to solve the problem with which you are tasked. I think this is why people sometimes struggle to adapt. This is such a unique culture such that nobody (not even 3x founders) are a one-to-one fit for the company culture. Everyone requires some tweaking, up-skilling, and learning to reach their optimal efficiency within the team, but some people aren't willing to vocalize their flaws or lack of understanding of certain tasks. Some people are proactive, but lack the consciousness or foresight to properly pre-empt the problems they may face when tasked with a challenge, and similarly fail to surpass it.

Pros

If you are on the open source team, you contributions are visible to the public and their open source library does have a following in the community

Cons

They recently rebranded from Grid AI, so read the reviews on the previous company page on glassdoor as well. - The exec team/upper management seems to have no idea about product direction or how to monetize it and they keep firing people. - What I heard from the people who have been with the company long enough, they have fired like 40-50 people in the past 2 years. - If you join, consider this more as an internship rather than a full-time position, because your employment with the company will probably be less than a year. - The exec team/upper management micromanages and you can't disagree with them on anything. - Deadlines set by the managers are ridiculous and they don't seem to have realistic ideas/time-lines/standards about product development. - Saying things move at a fast-pace in a startup and its not for everyone is just a cover up for super toxic work culture. - Lots of burned out employees at the company. - People who are let go seem to be relieved and happy. - Also, people who are let go are made to sign some ridiculous non-compete where they can't work at literally any other company that does machine learning or ML-ops.

We would not be where we are today without the contributions of all of the team members who have worked at Lightning AI. You gave your time, expertise, and passion to help build our company, and we thank you for that. Late last year, we decided to centralize our teams around our NYC, Palo Alto, and London hubs to address and improve many of the issues you mentioned, especially regarding folks burning out from having to work around the clock just to collaborate with their teammates. While it was a tough decision to make, it’s one that has positively impacted every aspect of our company, from work-life balance and collaboration to product development and project management. We continue to grow and evolve with your feedback in mind. We thank you for sharing and wish you all the best in your journey.
