Pros

- Programs make a difference and most families are amazed at the results - Co-workers are intelligent, funny, compassionate people with diverse backgrounds - There is some recognition for hard work - Opportunities for development and growth

Cons

Nanci Bell's (CEO) office is in the neighboring building, yet in 3 years, she set foot in the Learning Center only once. She did not say hello or ask for my name, but rather brusquely asked if another employee was in the office. Aside from that, I only saw her in company-wide leadership meetings on Zoom. Despite having ample opportunity to observe firsthand the various joys and challenges learning centers faced, as well as talk to the people on the ground, she remained aloof. Her demeanor set the tone for all leadership. The further one advanced in the company, the further they became from the people and problems they were managing. This led to a spiral of contradictory messages, creating perpetual confusion and frustration among all staff, particularly Clinicians. In addition, roles and expectations shifted constantly. Just when we had adjusted to one major change, another (often conflicting) change was thrust upon us. It was impossible to maintain integrity. What made this pattern particularly insidious was the fact that Nanci and her closest team members (husband, daughter, etc.) refused to acknowledge it. Instead, they’d find and often announce (in the aforementioned company-wide Zoom meetings) a scapegoat. Scapegoats were inevitably those who received the least support/voice while doing the most difficult work, i.e., Clinicians, Consultants, Associate Center Directors and Center Directors. Upper management preferred to speculate about or publicly humiliate those in inferior roles rather than have an honest conversation. In addition: - Schedule leaves no room for error/humanity (e.g., as a Clinician, you get 5 minutes between students. If you are one minute late to pick up your student from the lobby it is a problem, even if you were late because your previous student made a mess and refused to clean it up or you needed to use the restroom). Clinicians are expected to drill the student with questions and activities every moment of the 45-55 minute sessions. If there is a brief moment of conversation/fun that does not have to do with instruction, it is rebuked as a “wasted frame.” - Unclear guidelines on acceptable behavior. Conduct policies are vague and feedback from management and Instruction Support is conflicting. Feedback on how to manage behavior is given from those who have either met the student once for 30 minutes (whilst the child is on their best behavior) or never met them. Any and all conduct is almost always attributed to those who are forced to endure it (Clinicians, Consultants, ACDs) falling short in some way. - Nepotism and favoritism run rampant.

Pros

Location, fulfillment teaching students, support from other clinicians

Cons

Low pay, despite requiring a degree. There is little to no diversity among staff, and no people of color in management or leadership positions. In fact, there were only about 2–3 people of color out of roughly 25–30 staff members. There was no adequate support or training for working with students who have behavioral or mental health needs, and staff are discouraged from seeking support when dealing with these challenges. Students face little to no disciplinary consequences and are often allowed to behave however they want. The training provided is redundant, and the mentoring offered is minimal and ineffective. Many of the managers are rude but attempt to frame it as diligence or professionalism. Managers are often dishonest. They do not value loyalty and would rather have a higher turnover than invest in current employees. Consultants are generally supportive when they are available, but they carry an extremely heavy workload. The job requires a significant amount of work within an 8-hour shift, leaving little to no downtime. Ten-minute breaks are often spent cleaning up or preparing for the next class, and the one-hour break is rarely a full hour. Burnout is inevitable in this environment.

Strong Core Business Compromised by Mismanagement and Greed

Pros

Core intervention programs for Decoding and Reading Comprehension are incredibly effective and truly unique. Spending one summer working here is a good idea (then RUN!) if you teach reading intervention, because it will give you a whole new toolbox. Learning to administer and interpret those assessments is another transferable skill you can take with you, if you're able to be trained. If your student/child has severe issues with sensory-cognitive processing, and you've tried other programs but they don't work, this just might be it and is worth a second look. The evaluation is a good deal for parents no matter what, because all the standardized assessments they use are legit, and you can take the data with you to another service provider instead of paying Nanci Bell's exorbitant fees.

Cons

The wages paid are not fair to teachers. They see a tiny fraction of the rate being charged. In the big picture however, this company's culture and integrity have steadily gone downhill ever since the introduction of Lindamood-Bell Academy, one part vanity project and one part money grab. Teachers (and parents), RUN! These clowns are charging an arm and a leg to give students a sub-standard education, and teachers an unstable, unprofessional work environment. Behind the scenes, this operation is a MESS, and things got much worse after they restructured during the 2024-2025 school year. Working here as someone who previously taught in the classroom increasingly felt like educational malpractice. The lesson plans often don't actually get updated on time, forcing ineffective improvisation far more often than they'll admit, and the poor learning disabled students don't know the difference so they're happy to skate by. When plans do get updated, they're next to useless, because the company is trying to cobble together all these different curricula and pedagogical approaches with no clear guidance or comprehensive curriculum maps from anybody who actually knows what they're talking about. The blind are leading the blind, from the useless "Curriculum Advisors" who check boxes by giving generic advice, all the way down to the unqualified "Consultants" in their twenties with no relevant background other than having some adjacent experience administering the intervention programs and knowing the words to say in meetings. Projects and papers aren't graded by the corporate-level grading team for months, making it impossible to align instruction with differentiated needs accordingly. The buck doesn't seem to stop with anyone except the person writing the checks, so they people-please clients to a fault while writing enough reports to make it look like robust education is occurring. I've seen too many decisions driven by profit over data. It's not a healthy place to work for the long term -- there's a reason so many employees are young.
