Could have been great

Pros

1) The kids are awesome. You will always get some spoiled rich kids who refuse to work but most are very sweet. 2) There is a good amount of training that you receive before starting. You get paid for the training too.

Cons

1) Money hungry management 2) Lack of respect for "grunt" work, aka, working directly with kids 3) Once you're in a management position and are friends with other management, you can do eff all and not get fired. 4) To get promoted, you have to "look the part." For women, you need to be tall and blonde and pretty and passive or else you will be constantly looked over. 5) Ridiculous work loads. You end up having to do work off the clock to get everything you're expected to do done. When you bring this up to management, they tell you that you shouldn't have worked off the clock. 6) If you actually care about doing a good job, you will get screwed over constantly. 7) After the initial tutoring training, the rest of the corporate training is a waste of time. Most of it focuses on computer literacy (things anyone under the age of 30 can figure out independently) and not on best practices. 8) Vague instruction from managers instead of specific game plans and expectations.

The Job Isn't What They Tell You It Is

Pros

I liked my fellow tutors a lot and met some incredible kids.

Cons

This company is probably the worst I have ever worked for. The job description is deceiving. What they don't tell you is that you will be working with many children who qualify as "special needs" and who have moderate to severe behavioral issues. This is not "tutoring", but closer to educational therapy using a program that is outdated in its delivery and that you are told you are not allowed to deviate from. The 10-day "training" they provide is laughable at best and barely touches on how to manage students who need moderate to severe behavior management. Additionally, the pay rate they offer is ridiculous given the job expectations and what they charge parents per hour. Essentially, each tutor makes about 10-13% of what parents are charged hourly and the tutors do all the work. In one word, this company exploits its tutors, whom they call "clinicians". At the center where I worked, there was clear favoritism, with one employee showing up 2.5 hours late pretty much every day, then spending several hours doing personal things on their computer, even during sessions with students, with complete knowledge and support of center management. This person got promoted over others who had more education experience and who actually showed up and did their work. Demoralized is a good word for how I and several of my colleagues felt at the end of work each day, and I am a highly experienced educator. The turnover rate is extremely high and no wonder. When I dared to bring up the favoritism issue to management, it was brushed aside, and subsequently, any advancement opportunities I had been offered suddenly disappeared.

Don’t do it

Pros

Not living under a bridge

Cons

Cheesy insincere work culture, elaborate scheme to suck money out of desperate parents. The people doing all of the work are poorly compensated and are seen as dispensable. The company hires a massive amount of employees at the start of every summer knowing that over 90% will quit before then, and if you do stay into the school year, your hours will be cut dramatically. Also the company does not recognize the 4th of July as a holiday (The CEO comes from California, by the way) so that they make sure you work without holiday pay. Of course the program works for everyone to a degree, but how could someone not get better at something that they are forced to do over and over and over again.
