Hard job and too little pay

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Training is good Can be rewarding sometimes Flexible hours except in summer

Cons

Very poor pay for the kind of work. Its hard to tutor special needs children and the pay should reflect that. Plenty of other jobs with similar pay and way easier work. Only pick this one if you must

Pros

Staff are really friendly and especially during the summer when lots of people are hired, you'll meet some really great people. The programs tend to run well and a lot of thought is put into the best ways to help and motivate students, so day-to-day workdays can be really enjoyable. Management is friendly and hold a fairly open door. You can usually pop in at any time to speak to them about something. If you're finding something difficult or need help with a student then both staff and management are really supportive and willing to help out or discuss methodology with you. If you're a student applying just for the summer it's exhausting but good pay and a good experience.

Cons

Turnover is very high. There are opportunities to progress but management tends to focus more on sales and can be negligent about investing in its staff. Some people work for a few months before moving up the ladder and others wait years. During my time I saw a lot of people who were highly qualified and an amazing asset either not have their contract renewed or leave out of frustration for being promised promotion and never getting it. Their fixation on sales also means that students are taken on beyond the capacity of the centre during the summer, and sometimes a student who clearly needs help that the centre isn't properly equipped to give is taken on anyway, against the best interest of the student.
