Poor Prep for Tough Work

Pros

Can be fun and rewarding. Can gain awesome skill sets even if one is not a teacher. Great job for those who enjoy working well with others. Great summer job. Promotes creativity.

Cons

Poor oversight, mentorship. Childish corporate culture plagiarized mainly from Disney. Training is boring, unorganized, and tedious. Work is repetitive and ultimately mindless. Ability to discipline children is nonexistent. Schedule can change at anytime. Honestly, training was so awful, I wouldn't do this again just because of the 80 hours of misery.

Pros

The kids. It's a great feeling to be able to help children. The training provided for reading difficulties and disabilities such as dyslexia is much better than any online Barton certification.

Cons

Ironically the employees are taught to deal with the children in a very positive non critical manner, however the work environment was the opposite. In fact the design of the coaching of employees is set up to be highly critical from hour to hour. Senior employees are expected to find a list of issues to criticize new empolyees, and this went on for over 6 months. This was the most depressing job I've ever had. I dreaded going to work. It definitely effected my self esteem. The manager consistently made comments to me about my single parent status, such as, "I would think as a single parent you would want to take on more hours."

Pros

Being directly involved with student improvement. You get to see kids and adults do things they never thought they'd be able to do. Coworkers are usually caring people.

Cons

You will still only be guaranteed 30 hours a week. Management varies implementation at different learning centers, but the corporate policies can be enforced so that you have to be available during all of their business hours, which can be from 7am-7pm on weekdays and some varying hours on weekends. The schedule changes week-to-week, so you will never know if you can schedule something in the afternoon or evening. For the actual position: You will be expected to oversee students through their programs, manage their behaviors, throw parties, and meet with parents. Depending on the center, you may be over-scheduled, including filling in for other positions, and still expected to fulfill all duties on an hourly rate. They will track your paperwork online and send a report to your manager if your paperwork is not completed in the way they expect.
