Pros

Good people devoted to our work. Strong leaders that remain after all of the changes are keeping the hope alive and pressing to keep Lionbridge moving forward. New performance management---I actually got a review for the first time! Allegedly, merit increases also on the way. First Time Ever. New CTO seems really great.

Cons

As noted in recent reviews, the company has gone through some significant change: sold to PE firm, new CEO, new CFO. Normal spinning with new leadership finding their footing but it is taking a lot of energy. Leadership is building in layers and layers of (unnecessary) management. We weren't all dumb before new GUYS arrived...and yes they are all men. Operations leadership, Human Resources and some of those who came before are trying to keep the distraction to a minimum and make the best of the changes but the average employees are losing faith and feeling farther away.

Horrible company

Pros

It’s nice to truly be able to work on your own schedule.

Cons

I passed all my training and qualification checks on Tuesday. The first day I worked was that Wednesday. I received “Dear John” letter the following Monday saying my work was high quality. How is it possible to pass all training (including sample tasks) then be so bad as to be fired the next day? I wasn’t given any sort of performance review to show what mistakes I may have made.

Doesn't give raises

Pros

The managing editors in SF are smart and funny and quirky. Also, the flexibility of being a proofreader at Geotext is a huge selling point. You make your own schedule each week (but you aren't guaranteed the hours you request), and you can take weeks off at a time basically whenever you want to, with a reasonable amount of notice.

Cons

Geotext hasn't given me a raise, and I've been working there for around 2 1/2 years. The fact that Geotext doesn't regularly give raises to longer-term part-timers suggests that the company isn't interested in employee retention (at least when it comes to proofreaders) and isn't at all sympathetic to the challenges posed by the exorbitant cost of living in the cities where its offices are located (SF, NY, London). Also, on the editing side, there are few opportunities to learn, grow, and advance. And the office culture can be downright dismal: many of my colleagues, including some managers, come and go without even saying hello or goodbye. The project managers often don't even make eye contact with anyone on the editing side. This wouldn't be so surprising if we were a large office, but on any given day, there are usually only around ten to fifteen of us there.
