Pros

Great pay and benefits that are hard to beat

Cons

Pay and oftentimes promotions depend on how long you’ve been there and less on your work habits

Pros

Develop strong legal research and writing skills at the trial court level. Work for judicial officers and learn from inside the Court. No billable hour requirement. Great county benefits and retirement. Higher pay and better practical experience than the more “prestigious” clerkships. A strong sense of intrinsic value to the work by assisting judicial officers in carrying out their duties.

Cons

No client interaction, mostly legal research and writing all day. Can be lonely which is difficult if you are a social person. To do well takes a lot of work and long hours, but unlike private practice there are no bonuses to reward the hard work.
