Pros

Embarq is a very flexible work environment with a focus on achievement, not hours - meaning that management is open to flexible hours and time off for family issues.

Cons

We are currently going through a merger, and the flow of information about how it will affect jobs is very limited.

Pros

The people I interact with across the company are second to none. Nearly everyone demonstrates a can-do attitude and genuine respect for fellow employees. Ideas that are put forward are taken seriously and received with all due respect and follow-through. The company is providing good information on the pending merger/acquisition of Embarq. People in CenturyTel live the company's guiding principles and are valued for it. Training has been liberally provided on new technologies and operating systems in a timely fashion. The annual employee review process is well developed and ties directly in to the corporate values and principles as well as revenue and expense driving business objectives.

Cons

The acquisition of Embarq is raising the level of anxiety. This is helped by the frequent communications on the status of the joining of the two companies and cultures. Still, these deals do not go down on the premise of adding to or maintaining payroll and benefit costs. In that respect it is no better or worse than most in the industry. If you come from a "small company" culture, the systems and processes may seem like a forest of silos at first. Trying to order something not in the catalog of approved items is not impossible but certainly not a user friendly system to grind your way through.

Pros

CenturyTel is primarily a rural local exchange carrier that is in well into the process of diversifying its product & service offerings. Generally speaking, it has a good reputation with its customers. Because most of its business is in rural areas, it faces few viable competitors.

Cons

CenturyTel is headquartered in Monroe, LA, & most of its senior management is located there. The atmosphere is highly parochial, political, and even toxic, with advancement often depending upon who you know. Regional managers face a distinct career disadvantage since their corporate counterparts are better positioned to take credit for the successes and assign blame for the failures of regional projects.
