Mass chaos

Pros

Pay, benefits, weekends off. Unless you slap or spit in someone's face they will not fire you. Once you are hired you become a better human being. The simple idea of working for Lutron makes you godlike.

Cons

Chaos. Mass and utter chaos. The company believes that it is the best way to operate and if you question anything you are told that they have been around for 50+ years and make billions. Projects are discussed, analyzed, discussed more, studied more, discussed again, debated, re-analyzed, and then abandoned depending on the weather outside.

Dysfunctional at best. Dead end at worst

Pros

Great coworkers and family environment. They want you to feel like you're able to communicate and affect change within the company.

Cons

Terrible communication. Dysfunctional organization and management. Everything is handled on the fly. Inventory and P/L ratios are lost in taking care of the customer to a fault. This reduces profit margins, which trickles down to wages to its lower employees. Management/Engineering knows best and do not heed warnings about production issues or flaws in process until something breaks or safety issues happen. Unless you're tenured, your concerns are ignored. Poor safety practices and procedures. Issues are handled on a "after the fact" basis or safety practices are neglected if it interferes with management/engineering goals. Poor training development practices and is practically non-existent. You're handed manuals and some thrown together procedures by overworked engineers and expected to perform. Management/Engineering constantly in meetings rather than overseeing process and training employees to help increase productivity and knowledge. You WILL perform multiple job duties. It is expected that you change your job roles according to company priorities, which change constantly.

Was once a great company

Pros

The quality of the engineering team is second to none. Great people, great talent. If you join straight out of school, you will love the place initially and wonder why I only gave it two stars. Continue to the "Cons"....

Cons

The politics in middle and top management are awful. The leadership is well past their prime (passed it 30 years ago) and make the most ridiculous demands of the people around them. They attempt to obey the often impossible and incomprehensible requests, because to do otherwise is suicide. However, they take turns ratting each other out as they all try to stay in good grace. The leadership is sometimes disrespectful to women and minorities, although I don't think it is intentional (just stuck in the era before computers). HR has been described as "pure evil" by many, and I can't say that I'm impressed with their ethics. Bonuses have basically gone away since the last stock market crash (over 6 years ago now), even though the company has reasonable profits and a strong balance sheet. Don't make the mistake of joining "for a few years" and leaving afterwards - the non-compete will keep you from working anywhere else in the industry. And if you don't believe me, PAY a lawyer who knows contracts to review it in depth (and in the context of PA law) - don't use your cousin who is reading it over a beer during a football game.
