Pros

Line Workers: The line workers were the most brilliant people that I have ever worked with. They were people from all walks of life, and together, we could do... Anything... It feels like the original Maana sales pitches included asking the customer if we could solve their hardest problems... And we would... And it would be a JAM SESSION where'd be STOKED to work 80-100+ hours a week to pull off the impossible. We would put together solutions that were cutting edge in their time and made us a clear threat to the AI SAS players that still exist today. Nothing would get us more excited than beating out a company that is 2000x our size and then find out that they started adding slides about us in their sales collateral. I will forever love and be connected to these people... We fought in the trenches together... And to be crystal clear, not one of these human beings are with Maana today. Career: Nearly everybody I've spoken to doubled their compensation and caught up on their career progression after leaving Maana. In terms of being that needed stepping stone to brilliance, Maana checks that box in a weird and abusive way.

Cons

Management/Executives: Worst management team... Ever... Nothing I have ever read of or experienced will match the dysfunction that stems from this management team. The brilliant and badly needed visionary leaders departed early on and left behind a bog of incompetence and strife. Poor leadership decisions by sales, platform, or services were ALWAYS blamed on the defenseless line workers. Technical decisions in the platform seethed of ego... Decisions that freshman computer science majors would know to be mistakes but a team of people with 50+ years combined experience in technical leadership decided that would be the way. Executive escalations due to unhappy customers stemming from these poor technical decisions became adventures in fabricating the reality that the executives wanted to hear or damning would be the consequences. Non-existent bonuses or raises unless you kissed the ring in a way that was deeply abusive to your peers. Nothing built trust like living out Lord of the Flies and having the team brown-noser fabricate whatever deeply-disconnected reality that leadership wanted to hear, including which line worker could be thrown under the bus for issues that stemmed from leadership. Leadership's way to reinvigorate the staff was to direct money into an office remodel, instead of raises or bonuses, and then get upset with the staff when the office remodel failed to turn around moral. What makes me sad deep down, is that this leadership team have the billion dollar idea... And squandered that opportunity in the same way the town drunk keeps getting into car accidents... Only the town drunk starts to sober up when the car accident starts to affect families.

Pros

- Competitive pay - Competitive benefits - Opportunity to travel - Access to smart customers and co-workers

Cons

- Toxic work environment where asking questions gets you an incredulous look like you're the biggest idiot in the world - People who point out problems and even ways to resolve them are berated - Terrible work/life balance which is propagated by executives continually promising customers results and timelines that aren't possible to deliver - Egotistical co-founders who are either too ignorant or too proud to acknowledge that the company has been sinking for years - Prioritized selling consulting engagements over building a real product - Market has caught up, and passed, with what they used to consultant on - Platform makes it harder, not easier, to build solutions - Most of the customer use cases on the website aren't ones they've actually developed, maybe a conversation with a customer or even a workshop, but not an actual solution they developed - Brain drain has been ongoing for the last few years, with COVID they let go/lost the majority of the remaining good people - If you look at non C-level employees, none of the original 25-50 employees are still there, which speaks volumes by itself - All examples of using the platform are entirely trivial, you can chain together microservices without needing Maana, the interesting part was interconnecting and inferring knowledge across projects with the knowledge graph, but they don't have any examples of doing that--they might pretend they do but they don't if you dig deeper

Pros

- a few nice people - exposure to fortune 500 companies - smart coworkers - good salary and benefits

Cons

the biggest con is how management treats people with dissenting opinions. lots of really intelligent people were let go for voicing there thoughts. even if you don't end up going a certain direction you shouldn't create an environment where people are petrified of giving there perspective. you are paying people for there perspective not to be a broken tape recorder and say yes to everything executives say. it creates a very weird climate especially for a startup. that was the main reason i left. other cons include: - the platform isn't stable. - its not really 'ai' in the traditional sense - marketing just throws a bunch of buzz words like "big data" "iot" "ai" etc. its more of a framework for stitching together other services which is neat and useful but not really that new or related to cutting edge ml. the in house ai services kind of suck and nowhere near as good as competition from anything you'd' find on aws, azure, or third party libraries/solutions. they should also remove big data from there marketing, i saw the platform choke on a few gigs of data. the platform def has use cases but it is way oversold as some ground breaking thing that everyones supposed to be awe'd by. its not going to change the world or anything like that, there are many many other services that do similar things but that doesn't mean MAANA cant do them better. it just doesn't currently. - management sucks. very arrogant and unhelpful - lots of blaming between teams when things go wrong, instead of working together to solve problems. - overworked and stressed beyond any company I've worked at or heard of, and I'm a senior engineer with decades of experience. do not work here if your not prepared to commit your life to this company. - job security which i guess is standard issue for startups but kind of extreme here. people get hired and are let go within a year so that kind of sucks but i don't know the details since I'm not an executive with all the data. but really really smart people let go all the time which tells me it doesn't have to do with performance but struggling to get funding. but just my guess i don't really know for sure. - an overall depressing atmosphere, wasn't very happy during my 2.5 years. - little to no communication between sales and engineering so lots of customers take advantage and demand ridiculous kinds of work in an impossible timeline with zero push back. leads to stressed out 'war rooms' with people working long nights and weekends - majority of the company has been fired recently, the offices in huston, palo alto, and seattle have been closed so probably not on an upward trend, the company has like zero sales, and struggling to get investment. hopefully they get an injection of cash soon. its been around for 10 years with little profit. - the snacks could be better
