Pros

Very smart people, almost everyone has a PhD and knows their stuff inside and out. Would recommend very highly to anyone intrested

Cons

Projects can sometimes move slowly. A much slower pace than companies in private sector, which could be a pro or con depending on what youre looking for

We appreciate your insights. Overall, about a third of our technical staff are PhD's, a third have Master's Degrees, and a third have Bachelor's Degrees. We are fortunate to be able to attract highly qualified candidates at each level. It is sometimes the case that a project will move slowly. At times that is the nature of research work as it is sometimes hard to break new ground.

Pros

Hybrid academic/industry environment really promotes innovation and scholarly development in a non-profit setting.

Cons

Working within the DOD organization can be daunting and filled with bureaucracy.

Thank you for your insight. Lincoln Laboratory is unique in its role of conducting research. Unlike industry, we do not have a profit motivation or shareholders to satisfy. Unlike academia, we do not have to pursue grants and other sources of income to support our work. We are able to focus on developing the optimal technology solutions to problem of national security. There can be some bureaucracy that comes with government work but that comes with the territory. We appreciate your input.

Why so frequent job postings at MIT LL ?

Pros

Good technology learning environment for young post docs. Very good tuition reimbursement program to complete or add degrees or skills to your background.

Cons

As an FFRDC the number of staff members is strictly limited. So frequent job postings mean frequent "graduation" or ejection or termination of staff. You are fortunate and exceptional if your employment lasts longer than a 4 year college degree. Beware of LL's Laddering process to evaluate staff performance.

We appreciate your comments. FFRDC's do have a ceiling on staff that can be on board, depending on the organization and the contract. By and large, our staff stay for a good deal longer than four years. A portion of our total work program is not governed by ceiling so we are looking for talented technical employees most of the time. This is not actually a function of "graduation" but reflects a robust work program.
