Pros

Smart people, lots of interesting talks all of the time, ability to continue education, decent pay and good benefits

Cons

Pretty poor management (in my experience, it will vary by group), work is often periodic very slow and then very busy, not much upward mobility without a new degree

We are pleased that you are finding the Laboratory to be an interesting and collegial place to work. We are continuously trying to improve the preparation and training for managers. For the most part, our managers are promoted from within so we have opportunity to do better on training. We are also very aware of the need to continuously improve our onboarding practices. We have instituted mentoring programs and employee groups to help new employees to better navigate their careers. Thank you for your comments and insights.

Pros

Exciting research environment that is well-funded. Also a great place to work if you intend to go back to grad school (they have good benefits in this regard). Vacation policy is generous as well.

Cons

Individual experiences tend to vary from group to group. I was very happy with the management and technical environment within my group, but some friends had problems with workload due to management problems.

That you found an exciting, well funded research environment is a very good sign. We are proud of the work that we do and the contributions that we can make to national security. It is true that advanced education is considered a positive here and that we actively try to make it feasible for employees to continue their studies. While there is some additional administrative burden that is consistent with federal contracts, we typically try to minimize the impact on employees and processes. You can be assured that administrative processes will be reviewed with an eye toward improvement. Thanks for taking the time to reflect on your experience.
