Pros

Very interesting projects. High caliber staff. Deeply technical leadership. Close and very valued relationship with user and sponsor community. Flat organization with few hierarchies.

Cons

Flat organization means informal delegation of responsibility. Personal relationship with management is very important. Nature of work imposes restrictions on communication.

It's Decent For The Most Part

Pros

Salary isn't bad, nothing phenomenal but it pays the bills. Vacation time is decent, again, not great but not bad, about par with most government contract type companies. Somewhat flexible schedule depending on the group you're in. Work is interesting, again, depending on the group you're in. If you're full time staff, you're pretty much assured a long term gig as long as your work is good.

Cons

Very large company. Most employees are worker bees with not a lot of room for advancement even if you're a standout. If you want to make a name for yourself, this is not the place for you. I've been there 10 years and although the raises come yearly, they are very small, don't cover inflation. Promotions are rare. It almost seems like middle management wants to keep people down. I've been in several different groups and it's a common modus operandi among all of them. If you're a contractor, you are expendable. There is no job security no matter how great your work is.

We will certainly consider your input and appreciate your input. The organization is intentionally flat for a number of reasons. That is not always fully understood, Compensation programs are regularly reviewed and your thoughts will be considered.
