Pros

Great experience building location. Great people to work alongside. Experience can translate into similar industry jobs at other locations.

Cons

Slow Human Resources department. Pay is under industry-standard due to status as non-profit.

Pros

There are a lot of extremely intelligent people working at the Lab and usually you can find someone with expertise in almost anything you could be working on. It is nice to be involved with great innovative projects that are used in theater to help our troops. There are technical seminars several times a week and people are encouraged to attend. The benefits are fantastic. Three weeks vacation to start and then four starting in year two...Not sure why they even bother starting anyone with three since it immediately bumps up the following year (I'm not complaining) and the Lab might have the best educational benefit in the country if you are selected for Lincoln Scholars. The Lab is extremely flexible with time off and understands the need for work/life balance.

Cons

I don't know what it's like in other Groups, but my work is constantly criticized without any direction for improvement. The best I get is ok this is fine and receive no mentoring. I don't know if my work is that bad and I need to switch careers or it's just this particular person's style. I'm not averse to criticism, but I would appreciate feedback to know how to improve or do it in a way that won't garner criticism. There are other people I could go to for assistance but was told not to and should go to him for anything. Anytime I've taken initiative and do something it isn't well received so now I do exactly what I'm told and how I'm told to do it; no more and no less. Raises are kind of arbitrary and really depend on how much your Group leaders want to push for you when they all get together to determine the ladder.

Thanks for your insights. I hope that you will talk to someone in your management change or HR about your concerns on feedback. Often this is a matter of training but either way, it is something that can and should be addressed.

It is good to hear that your co-op experience was good. Challenging work is one of the key points at Lincoln Laboratory. We are continuing to work at making the clearance process faster and will try to do better in communicating status as we get updates.
