Pros

Problems are challenging and exciting. Colleagues are very smart and talented. Management develops presentation skills well. Access to management fairly easy. Good retirement benefits.

Cons

Commute from Boston time consuming. Compensation/perks could be more in line with silicon valley competitors. Structure of projects determined externally and so sometimes education of project team members steals time from IP development.

Thanks for your insight and overall positive view. Ready access to management is one of the desired outcomes of our flat organization. Our studies show that our compensation and benefits compare favorably with the market overall. Many employees who have left and returned have noted that the resources, intellectual challenge, stability, and quality of work here are more desirable than other places. We offer a different set of strengths and motivations than many commercial environments. That is something each individual should consider as they look at employment here. We provide a shuttle from the MIT campus that might be an option in commuting. We do work with the local transit agencies to investigate ways to improve transportation. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting your positive experience. Space can be an issue in some areas. There is active movement to increase and update space throughout the Lab in accordance with an overall redesign. Like most large scope projects, it will take some time for full implementation.

Pros

Benefits. 14 holidays, 4 weeks of vacation (3 the first year), flexible work schedule. Lots of good people, many experts. Many opportunities for research.

Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement with only three staff tiers. Raises can be small and don't keep up with inflation.Group leaders don't often communicate well with staff, leaving them often "clueless" when reviews are due, requiring staff to strongly self advocate and self promote.

Your insight is appreciated. I am pleased that you have reflected on the quality of our benefits program and the high quality staff that we are able to attract. It is true that there is not a lot of advancement in title. That is by design. We regularly sample the market for compensation and find that our salaries are well positioned. Although we do not have a lot of different titles, staff are reviewed regularly and salary is brought up to reflect performance and the market. Your concerns about Group Leaders are troubling. I will suggest that you address specific issues with your management or HR. We continually strive to improve and are offering increased training to managers. You might also suggest to the Group Leader Forum that there is an issue for them to consider. We appreciate your candor and ten years of service.
