Pros

If you are a staff member, you have the opportunity to work on a lot of different tasks (everything from hardware to writing specifications to coding) and are expected to quickly absorb new technologies and ideas. The lab also has an academic culture and you will be encouraged to give talks, write papers, go to conferences, and so on. My group in particular has had active collaborations with scientists from the MIT campus as well.

Cons

The benefits are very good, but the salary is not quite as high as comparable positions in the private sector for my field. Also, I personally felt that the standards for contractors are lower in general compared to staff.

Pros

Excellent benefits package, stable employment, challenging environment- you are surrounded by PhDs from MIT and similar schools

Cons

Like with any government research laboratory you have to deal with a large amount of bureaucracy. Hiring limit of 2000 has been filled years ago and the remaining positions are given to contractors who don't have the same benefits as the Government employees.
