Pros

There is a lot of campus collaboration with other researchers. There is a drive to publish and open-source your work. For many researchers, the ability to share your work with the world is a great incentive that private companies often do not offer.

Cons

The open-sourcing process requires multiple levels of approval which is quite annoying. You are often placed on multiple projects each year meaning your time is split between competing priorities.

Pros

Amazingly brilliant colleagues, wide range of projects to support national defense, great resources.

Cons

Technical leaders don't often make good managers - make sure you get into the right group. Many "lifers" here, but thats not all bad - sometimes hard to get new ideas through.
