Your Just an Admin...

Pros

Strong benefit package (Pension, health insurance coverage, tuition reimbursement) - same as MIT campus.

Cons

As an administrative assistant, you are constantly reminded that you are "just an admin" - undervalued and underpaid. This position is a catch-all for anything the Group Leader/ business manager/staff doesn't want to do. There is no recognition for new initiatives or changes. Senior admins "lifers" just want to keep the processes as they have always been done. Because the senior admins do a lot that the GL/BM doesn't want to do, but should be doing - they get ultimate leeway and are untouchable.

Great place to work!

Pros

Freedom of an academic environment without the pressure to publish or find grants. Great group leaders that encourage staff growth and side projects.

Cons

Can be a bit slow-moving like its government customers.
