Pros

Pleasure of working with brilliant people who are creating our future world, whether solving the riddles of common illness and rare disease, or social challenges like climate change, or new frontiers like a woman on Mars. Every day brings something new, and I love the innovation and energy.

Cons

The wheels of bureaucracy move too slowly. Short staffed in many departments impacts the business model. Eg. need to wait several weeks for an appointment in medical; contracted funds arrive at the university are not distributed to units sometimes for months.

Pros

I work in a well funded research entity at the Institute, so I have good support and resources to perform my job. I also have a good, trusting supervisor who gives me the freedom to do my job well.

Cons

I have spoken with designers in other areas of the Institute who work on really tight budgets with micro managing bosses, so there are definitely less desirable design jobs around. Also, from a pure creative perspective, graphic design work in academia, especially STEM fields can be a challenging dialogue with clients i.e. professors/academics. It can be difficult to get a scientist or engineer to see past the precise accuracy to their work to allow for something artistic or abstract to be designed.
