Pros

Pretty decent benefits, salary raises can be good, if your boss/PI are on top of things. Raises come once a year, and if your boss stalls on submitting paperwork you can be pushed off onto the next cycle. Commuter benefits, nice buildings, smart people.

Cons

Often expected to work long hours. Bosses can be incompetent about doing reviews in a timely manner which can impact your ability to get raises. If you're working at MIT but funded through a grant, and then switch to direct funding they will match your salary, but you are SOL if your funding source had better benefits. My whole department basically had a 20% cut when that happened. They also will use temps for years instead of hiring real employees. Real moral killer.

Pros

The ODL is moving pretty quickly in terms of projects, and has plenty lined up for some years to come. MIT is a cool place to work if you put in the effort to be connected. Managament is pretty flexible schedule-wise. There's a lot of opportunity to make a real impact.

Cons

- There's been a bit of a focus shift in the ODL over the past year. - Realistically, the work I contribute to mostly benefits residential education, rather than global access to it. - You have to be pretty active about seeking out campus events and interest groups if you want to feel like you're a real part of MIT. In the ODL, it takes a good amount of effort to not feel completely disconnected from the rest of MIT.
