Pros

The exact salary differs from department to department. Ours are enough for comfortably living in the greater Boston area.

Cons

Obviously a grad student salary is not going to help with saving or paying off student loan.

Pros

World-class research, world-class people & minds.

Cons

As a postdoc/research scientist, can be isolated, but that's a problem with all places.

Pros

MIT is full of extremely brilliant and hard-working people. In my time there, the people I met never ceased to amaze me. The professors are world-renowned, the students driven and motivated to succeed, and the environment is very intellectually stimulating.

Cons

The facilities were not all at the caliber one would expect from a top-ranked school. Some areas were amazing, some forgotten. The basement labs in some buildings suffered heating/cooling and ventilation issues, a general lack of maintenance, and even occasional minor flooding (couple of inches of water). As a graduate student, these unnecessary events were a distraction and a waste of time.
