Pros

Access to world-class research community across many fields and disciplines; many opportunities throughout community for networking and professional development, either for academic or industry jobs.

Cons

Stressful culture and work environment. Departmental cultures varies significantly, and can't be generalized. Success in work and post-postdoctoral job search critically depends on your advisor and mentors.

Pros

Great freedom of research topic in MIT Media Lab. Learned a lot working with most brilliant people on the Earth. Pays off your tuition.

Cons

Compensation is very limited. Although it's enough for living in Cambridge

Pros

MIT does a great job at optimizing administrative tasks - they streamline procurement, accounting, and benefits-related forms with great websites and software. Their departments and institutes are structured to facilitate communication and productivity. The benefits package is also fantastic with quite a few options in health care coverage, 401k, and commuting reimbursement. MIT also values retention - there are many employees who have spent their entire careers at MIT.

Cons

As with most higher education institutions, salaries are lower than what one might receive in other sectors.
