Pros

Students get paid to do work on campus and work with professors they respect. Many times they get very valuable experiences and great recommendations

Cons

The pay is very low (9.25/hr), and the online application process is rather difficult to access for some reason... There needs to be a clear THIS IS THE APPLICATION LINK on the webpage. Sometimes, the professors abuse students to do BS work. Not super common though.

Pros

MIT has a fantastic work environment and the best academic environment anywhere in the world. Highly recommended for a postdoc or a professorship.

Cons

The postdocs here don't have the same sorts of rights that they do elsewhere. A few that come to mind: gym membership costs are the same as staff rather than students, so $500/yr; the salary is a little low; and we have no consulting rights and the IP policy is definitely skewed in MIT's favor.

Pros

If you like hard but meaningful work, this is the right place. Knowing that you are at the cutting edge of research is exciting. Graduate stipend is good enough to live on, and health benefits are great.

Cons

As other people have pointed out, you are working with the best and brightest, so it is easy to get down on yourself if you aren't "perfect." Sometimes the hours are very long--expect to work 50+ hours a week for a "part-time" RA.
