Pros

MIT is decentralized. One upside is that if you don't like the culture in a particular department, you can always wait until a job elsewhere opens up and move there. MIT offers a pension - which is HUGE - since very few places offer this benefit any more. I feel like I've had the opportunity to really learn and grow at MIT. I've had several really good managers who have valued my work and recommendations.

Cons

MIT is very decentralized. So, finding synergy between the siloed units (central HR, etc) and their counterparts embedded in departments, labs, and centers, can be very difficult. There can be so much bureaucracy that gets in the way of doing certain aspects of the job (hiring) that it can be daunting.

Pros

The lab I work at has a collaborative, open culture that allows undergraduates to meaningfully contribute to research even as they are being trained.

Cons

I really have no complaints at all.
