Pros

Great all around but very silod many useless functions and waste. Great community great vibe hr seriously lacked in getting benefits. Flexible Kind Understanding High work life balance High levels of autonomy Leaders assume you're competent, first time in my career

Cons

Meeting heavy Always on planning mode Unclear growth potential HR is terrible, especially with road blocks to services and benefits. Not impossible but wildly frustrating.

Pros

MIT's institution-wide policies are very employee friendly, with good benefits, vacation, flexibility, carefulness with Covid, perks like free food and events, etc. And MIT is very good about hiring internal candidates, so admin and educational staff have job change opportunities. Also there is a real commitment to diverse hiring.

Cons

MIT has very little oversight/control over how individual departments are run, so the experience depends totally on who you work for- and faculty are, generally, not awesome managers. So while MIT may be good about work-life balance and treating employees with courtesy and respect, you might end up in a dept with a boss who expects insane work hours, has inconsistent expectations, or plays major favorites, and MIT can't/doesn't do much about it.
