Pros

MIT has great research and wonderful facilities. The benefits they offer are good as well. There are a lot of people who want you to succeed and will help you pursue your goals id you start out with them in mind. Flexible work hours as long as you have a strong work ethic.

Cons

Very heavy work culture and some members of the community still have a very hierarchical mindset. Women still get talked down to, but much less than in other research institutes I have worked in. Definitely prioritize your goals and your time, otherwise, you will be trampled.

Pros

I work in a well funded research entity at the Institute, so I have good support and resources to perform my job. I also have a good, trusting supervisor who gives me the freedom to do my job well.

Cons

I have spoken with designers in other areas of the Institute who work on really tight budgets with micro managing bosses, so there are definitely less desirable design jobs around. Also, from a pure creative perspective, graphic design work in academia, especially STEM fields can be a challenging dialogue with clients i.e. professors/academics. It can be difficult to get a scientist or engineer to see past the precise accuracy to their work to allow for something artistic or abstract to be designed.
