Pros

Excellent people to work with, excellent intellectual environment.

Cons

Academic science doesn't pay well, but you already know this if you are thinking about postdocs.

Pros

Remote work provides good flexibility, MIT benefits are excellent, and some colleagues are genuinely kind and supportive.

Cons

No real upward mobility. Promotions are often discussed but rarely materialize. Pay is below industry standards, and many employees are primarily assigned repetitive grunt work with limited opportunities for growth or skill development. Additionally, some individuals in management positions are unnecessarily rude and unprofessional, which contributes to a negative work environment.

Pros

You learn a ton in this environment, and get to work with inspiring people. It is definitely challenging to get in and perhaps even more challenging to finish the Ph.D. But, if you are grateful/appreciative of being at MIT it is all worth it.

Cons

Some P.I.s can be too busy with their companies, outside involvements (speaking arrangements, book deals, etc.), and departmental responsibilities to have time to properly mentor their graduate students.
